Arrell S. Monegan, age 16, was fatally shot on March 16, 2013, in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago. He was with two friends at the 2400 block of West 58th Street when an unknown gunman approached and opened fire. Monegan was shot in the shoulder and back, and he was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the attack. His tragic death was ruled as a homicide, and reports indicate that he might have been an unintended target in a case of mistaken identity.
Arrell was well-liked by his friends and family, who remembered him for his passion for dancing and for his vibrant personality. He loved the Chicago dance style known as "boppin'" and was particularly fond of dancing to P. Rico’s "Hang With Me." His friends fondly recalled how he would always be the first to get up and dance, encouraging others to join him. His older sister described him as a "sweet, kindhearted" young man whose goal was to lift his family out of the difficult circumstances they faced on Chicago's South Side.
Despite the best efforts of his loved ones to seek justice, Monegan’s killer remains at large. His death, like many other youth homicides in Chicago, underscores the ongoing challenges of gun violence and the harsh realities faced by many families in neighborhoods dealing with systemic violence.
