In the early morning hours of June 8, 2024, in Batesville, Mississippi, 31-year-old Dameon Sanford, a father of six, was fatally shot at a car wash next to the Panola 1st Stop convenience store on Panola Avenue. Surveillance footage from the convenience store, which was closed at the time, showed Sanford walking to the adjacent car wash, where he appeared to be waiting for someone.
Shortly after Sanford's arrival, two vehicles pulled up to the car wash.
Individuals, whose identities were obscured by their clothing, exited the vehicles and confronted Sanford. The confrontation was brief, ending with the individuals shooting Sanford multiple times at close range. The assailants then quickly fled the scene in their vehicles. Dameon Sanford was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by the Batesville Police Department led to the arrests of a father and son in connection with the murder of Dameon Sanford. On June 25, 2024, 44-year-old Arlando James Webb turned himself in to the authorities. His son, 24-year-old Orlando Jay Webb, was taken into custody the next day. Both men were charged with murder and were held at the county jail, with their case pending presentation to a Grand Jury.
A third individual, 41-year-old Nathan Charles Johnson, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Investigators believe Johnson was the driver of one of the vehicles that arrived at the car wash on the night of the shooting. He was later released on bond. In a related incident on the night of Arlando Webb's surrender, a drive-by shooting occurred at a residence on Shiloh Road. It is believed that Nathan Johnson was the intended target of this shooting; however, a four-year-old child was struck by gunfire. The child's injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
