In the summer of 2024, the life of Marcus 'MJ' Daniels Jr., a 21-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A promising senior defensive back for the University of Southern Mississippi football team, Daniels was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle on the evening of June 11, 2024, at the Ivy Row Apartments, an off-campus housing complex. He had been fatally shot.
His death, which occurred during what was later described as an attempted armed robbery and carjacking, sent shockwaves through the university and his hometown of Lucedale.
Daniels was a celebrated athlete, having been a standout player at George County High School before beginning his collegiate career at the University of Mississippi. He transferred to Southern Miss in 2023, where he quickly made an impact, tying for the team lead in interceptions during his first season. He was anticipated to be a starting safety for the Golden Eagles in the upcoming 2024 season. His coaches and teammates remembered his infectious smile and charismatic personality, which had a brightening effect on everyone around him. Beyond the football field, he was a beloved son and brother, known for his love of family, fishing, and hunting.
The Hattiesburg Police Department launched an immediate and intensive investigation into Daniels' death, which quickly led to the identification of several suspects. Just days after the shooting, on June 14, three teenagers were taken into custody. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Orlando May of Hattiesburg, 17-year-old Allen Marcus Gardner of Houston, Texas, and 16-year-old Samir Green of Hattiesburg. All three were charged with capital murder and attempted armed carjacking, with the two juveniles being charged as adults. May faced additional charges of felony eluding and two counts of grand larceny auto.
The investigation continued to unfold, and less than a week later, a fourth suspect was apprehended. On June 20, 16-year-old Nytavion Shaw of Laurel was arrested and also charged as an adult with capital murder and attempted armed carjacking. A significant development in the case came on October 3, 2024, when Nytavion Shaw pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. In his plea, Shaw admitted that the killing occurred during an armed robbery. He now faces a prison sentence of 20 to 40 years. The remaining three suspects, Orlando May, Allen Marcus Gardner, and Samir Green, were denied bond and are awaiting trial for their alleged roles in the death of Marcus Daniels Jr.
