On a Tuesday evening in the summer of 2024, 41-year-old Dustin Patton, a resident of Harrison, Arkansas, was in Coahoma County, Mississippi, for his work as an agricultural worker, a job he had been doing in the area for about 15 years. Around 9 p.m. on July 16th, he received an alert on his cell phone about a malfunctioning irrigation pivot pump and set out to investigate. When he did not return, his wife became concerned after noticing his phone's location had not changed for two hours and contacted a friend to check on him.
Authorities were dispatched to a field near the intersection of Friars Point Road and Highway 1, where they discovered Patton in his truck. He had been shot. His vehicle had been struck by gunfire at least 15 times, with one bullet entering through the back glass and passing through the headrest. Despite the violent nature of the attack, robbery did not appear to be the motive, as cash in his wallet, a laptop, an unfired pistol, and thousands of dollars worth of tools and farm equipment were left untouched in his vehicle.
Patton was airlifted to a hospital in Memphis in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries three days later, on July 19, 2024. Known as a dedicated family man and a hard worker, his death shocked the local farming community. He was a husband and a father to four children.
The Coahoma County Sheriff's Department launched an intense investigation into the shooting. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Dustin Patton, and a motive has not been determined.
