Black / African American male Romero Eleregus Hampton Jr., 21, was a former football player whose life was cut short by violence in Tupelo, Mississippi. On the night of July 29, 2024, the quiet of the evening was shattered at the Hilldale Apartments on Monument Drive. Around 10:30 p.m., residents in the complex reported hearing the sharp crack of gunfire. Responding to the scene, witnesses discovered Hampton lying on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds.
In a desperate bid for survival, he was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation into Hampton's death moved quickly as Tupelo Police detectives and U.S. Marshals began pursuing leads. Within days of the homicide, authorities identified a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting. On August 1, 2024, police arrested 22-year-old Makaiyah Woods, taking him into custody. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
During his initial court appearance, Woods displayed erratic behavior, appearing before the judge with a towel draped over his head and reportedly spitting throughout the proceeding. It was revealed during the hearing that Woods was already on probation for unrelated offenses at the time of the shooting. Due to the severity of the capital murder charge and his prior legal status, the judge denied him bond, ordering him to remain in jail pending further legal action. As the legal process commenced, investigators had not yet publicly disclosed a specific motive for the shooting.
