Parmvir Singh, a 33-year-old man of Indian descent, had been in the United States for just 14 months, seeking the American dream and a better life to support his family back in his village of Dhapai in Kapurthala, Punjab. His journey tragically ended on September 11, 2022, inside the Chevron gas station on Cliff Gookin Boulevard in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he worked as a clerk.
Friends and relatives described Singh as a 'beautiful soul' and a kind human being with many dreams, who would ride his bicycle to work each morning. He was his parents' only son and had hoped to one day bring them to America.
On that Sunday morning, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a man named Chris Copeland, then 26 years old, entered the convenience store with the intent to rob it. Security footage from inside the store captured the harrowing events that followed. Copeland, wearing a distinctive olive hoodie, yellow t-shirt, and colorful pajama bottoms, pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at Singh. Despite the threat, Singh remained calm and gracious, complying with all of Copeland's demands. He handed over money from the cash register and even opened the safe, providing Copeland with a bank bag for the cash, a gesture of cooperation that went beyond what was asked.
After receiving the money, Copeland ordered Singh to get on the floor. Singh obeyed without resistance. In a shocking and senseless act of violence, Copeland then jumped over the counter, walked up behind the kneeling clerk, and executed him with a single gunshot to the back of the head at point-blank range. Singh was rushed to the North Mississippi Medical Center in grave condition and was pronounced dead about six hours later. The brutal nature of the crime, described by the Tupelo police chief as one of the worst he had seen in his 27-year career, sent shockwaves through the community.
The investigation, led by the Tupelo Police Department, moved swiftly. Thanks to the clear surveillance footage and help from the community, Christopher Copeland was identified as the suspect. He was arrested just hours after the murder at his last known address. Copeland, who had a prior criminal history including burglary and larceny charges and was on probation at the time of the killing, was charged with capital murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was held without bond. In the days following the murder, hundreds of people from the Tupelo community gathered for a candlelight vigil at the gas station to mourn the loss of Parmvir Singh, leaving flowers and cards in his memory.
In July 2023, a Lee County grand jury indicted Christopher Copeland on the charges of capital murder and possession of a gun by a felon. The District Attorney's office announced it was prepared to seek the death penalty. However, in April 2025, Copeland chose to plead guilty to capital murder. Following his plea, a judge in the Lee County Circuit Court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that prosecutors described as a 'monstrously barbaric' and cowardly execution.
