On the evening of September 2, 2024, in the community of Robinsonville, Mississippi, tragedy struck at the Kirby Estates Apartments. A 911 call was placed at approximately 7:52 p.m. reporting a shooting. When sheriff's deputies and first responders arrived at the scene on Kirby Road, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as 38-year-old Vandarren Marqueze McCray of Clarksdale, a Black male. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, McCray succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was pronounced deceased by the Tunica County Coroner.
The ensuing investigation by the Tunica County Sheriff's Office led to the identification of several suspects. On September 4, 2024, authorities executed a search warrant at the Kirby Estates Apartments, taking two individuals into custody. One of these men, 30-year-old Tanio Hall of Robinsonville, was subsequently charged with murder and conspiracy in connection with McCray's death. Also arrested that day was 23-year-old Tavion Crutchfield of Louisiana, who was charged with accessory after the fact and conspiracy. It was discovered that both men had outstanding warrants from other states; Hall was wanted in Texas for a weapon offense and failure to appear, while Crutchfield had warrants in Louisiana for false imprisonment and battery of a dating partner.
Two days later, on September 6, the investigation culminated in another arrest. Jarvis Grant, a 32-year-old from Robinsonville, was taken into custody and also faced charges of murder and conspiracy. The investigation continued, and nearly a year later, on September 2, 2025, a fourth suspect was arrested. Michael Cage, 30, of Robinsonville, was charged with murder, conspiracy, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case against the men charged in Vandarren Marqueze McCray's death is ongoing as the investigation continues.
