In the small town of Robinsonville, Mississippi, a routine training exercise on January 21, 2015, ended in tragedy, claiming the life of a respected law enforcement officer. John Ballard Gorman, the newly appointed Director of Investigations for the Mississippi Gaming Commission, was fatally wounded during this session. Gorman, a 45-year-old male, had dedicated 22 years of his life to the commission, earning a reputation for his professionalism and dedication.
The incident unfolded around 9:00 a.m. at the commission's office. During a training scenario, Gorman was role-playing as an assailant armed with a bladed weapon. In the course of the exercise, another agent's firearm discharged, and a live round struck Gorman in the chest. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The promotion he had celebrated just a day prior to his death made the loss even more poignant for his colleagues and the law enforcement community.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the inquiry into the fatal shooting. The investigation aimed to meticulously piece together the sequence of events and ascertain if any procedural missteps contributed to the accidental discharge. Following the investigation, the death was officially ruled an accident. Consequently, no arrests were made, and no criminal charges were filed in connection with the incident. The agent whose weapon was involved in the accidental shooting was placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation was pending. John Gorman is survived by his wife and two daughters.
