In the early days of the new year, a family argument on Detroit's east side escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter, claiming the life of 26-year-old Daniel Berry on January 2, 2023. The dispute, which turned violent, also resulted in the death of another of Berry's cousins, 17-year-old Jamil Thornton.
The young men were shot and killed by a cousin who, following the double murder, took his own life. The gunman was identified as the perpetrator of the killings of his two cousins.
The incident, which stemmed from a familial disagreement, concluded as a murder-suicide, leaving a family devastated by the loss of three of its members in a single, violent outburst. Because the suspect died by suicide at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Daniel Berry and Jamil Thornton.
