Joseph Selita, a 28-year-old Caucasian man from the nearby suburb of Sterling Heights, was driving his black Charger when he pulled up to Clayton Willis, a well-known 65-year-old double-amputee who was panhandling in his wheelchair.
An exchange of words between Selita and Willis quickly escalated into a heated verbal
altercation. According to the initial findings of Detroit homicide investigators, Selita was armed with a gun. A shot was fired, though it remains unclear if anyone was struck by this first bullet. The confrontation then turned into a physical struggle for control of the firearm. In the ensuing chaos, five to six more shots rang out, striking both men.
Joseph Selita was pronounced dead at the scene from at least one gunshot wound. Clayton Willis, who had been shot multiple times, was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The motive behind the deadly confrontation is still under investigation by the Detroit Police Department, who have been seeking witnesses to come forward with any information.
The incident was particularly tragic for Willis, who had survived a previous shooting just six months earlier in July 2023 while he was panhandling. That case remained unsolved. In the deaths of both Joseph Selita and Clayton Willis, authorities have not yet made any arrests, and no additional suspects have been publicly identified as the investigation continues.
