In the early morning hours of May 25, 2024, the community of Idlewild, Michigan, was disturbed by the sound of gunfire. Just after midnight, Lake County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the vicinity of Idlewild Lake following reports of shots being fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man lying unresponsive in the road. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Rashad Hawkins, a Black male from nearby Baldwin, who was pronounced deceased at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the death of Rashad Hawkins led to the swift identification and apprehension of a primary suspect. Marquavis Darnelle Cager, an 18-year-old from Idlewild, was taken into custody and subsequently arraigned on May 30, 2024. He faces charges of open murder and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with the fatal shooting. A judge set his bond at $1 million cash or surety, and preliminary court hearings were scheduled for June 2024.
Further investigation implicated two other individuals in the events surrounding Hawkins' death. Lee Sherman Williams, a 41-year-old man from Idlewild, was initially arrested at the scene for resisting and obstructing a police officer. Later, he faced the more serious charge of accessory after the fact to a felony, specifically open murder. His bond was set at $50,000. Additionally, Naikita Nicole Dukes, also of Idlewild, was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony. Her bond was set at $75,000 cash or surety, with her preliminary court proceedings also scheduled for June. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
