In the early hours of Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, the city of Lansing, Michigan, was shaken by an act of violence that claimed the life of 17-year-old Kylete Nasir Owens. A male student at Everett High School, Owens was remembered for his amazing smile, larger-than-life personality, and his kind heart. He was an honor student with aspirations of pursuing a career in music after his anticipated graduation in 2025.
He enjoyed playing basketball and football and was deeply loved by his family and friends.
The tragic incident unfolded around 2:50 a.m. near the downtown riverfront on the 300 block of River Front Drive. A large gathering of people was present when gunfire erupted, resulting in a mass shooting. In the chaos that ensued, seven individuals were shot. Emergency services responded to the scene, and several victims were transported to a local hospital. Kylete Owens was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victims, all males, ranged in age from 15 to 20 years old, with two of them initially listed in critical condition.
