In the fall of 2016, the life of Marcus Jamal Osby, a 28-year-old Black man from Lansing, Michigan, came to a tragic end in a case that police would later describe as a double murder-suicide. Osby, known to friends and family as 'Hoss' for his significant stature and physical strength, was a father of two sons and was remembered for his kind heart and gentle spirit.
He was a graduate of Everett High School, where he had been a basketball player, and had worked for Meijer Warehouse for eight years before recently starting a job at General Motors.
On the morning of October 27, 2016, events took a dark turn. Police were dispatched to a home on the south side of Lansing for a welfare check after receiving an anonymous 911 call. Inside the residence, they discovered the bodies of three individuals. The deceased were identified as Marcus Jamal Osby, his ex-girlfriend Latoy Mesha Tate, 29, and Xazier Charles Dean, 25. All three had died from gunshot wounds.
The investigation by the Lansing Police Department concluded that Osby had fatally shot Tate and Dean before turning the gun on himself. The incident was characterized as a domestic-related shooting. It was later revealed that the home where the shooting occurred was one that Osby had previously shared with Tate, with whom he had two children.
Further details emerged about the troubled nature of Osby and Tate's relationship. In 2014, Tate had sought and been granted a personal protection order against Osby, citing a history of physical abuse and expressing fear for her safety. The protection order, however, had not been renewed after its initial six-month period. Additionally, court records indicated that Osby had a previous run-in with the law, having faced charges of assault with intent to murder in a 2012 shooting outside a Lansing bar, though those charges were ultimately dropped due to a lack of evidence.
