On a tragic Friday afternoon in Essex, Maryland, the life of 29-year-old Shaliah Hendrix, a mother of three, was cut short in a senseless act of violence. On May 5, 2023, what was initially reported as a car crash on Route 702 near Marlyn Avenue unfolded into a homicide investigation when first responders discovered that Shaliah had sustained a fatal gunshot wound while inside her vehicle.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was soon pronounced deceased, leaving her family and friends in a state of shock and profound grief.
In the days that followed, a makeshift memorial of green balloons and candles marked the spot where her car had veered off the road. Friends gathered to remember a woman they described as bubbly, with an infectious smile, who was affectionately known as 'Leah.' They spoke of her many talents, including baking and doing hair and nails, and her compassionate nature, which extended to taking time to feed the homeless. Her sudden and violent death was a devastating blow to all who knew her, especially her three children who were left without their mother.
The investigation into Shaliah's death moved swiftly. Baltimore County homicide detectives utilized a combination of witness accounts, surveillance footage, and cell phone location data to piece together the events of that fatal day. Their work led them to two suspects, 29-year-old Rylan Harris and 28-year-old Darashea Gross. According to police, the incident stemmed from a road rage altercation that began on Pulaski Highway and escalated as the vehicles continued onto Route 702. It is alleged that the suspects' vehicle pulled alongside Shaliah's car, at which point she was shot.
On May 17, 2023, both Harris and Gross were taken into custody. Harris was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and firearm offenses, while Gross was charged with first-degree murder. Despite being interviewed by investigators, both suspects denied any involvement in the shooting. They are currently being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond as they await trial for the murder of Shaliah Hendrix.
