In the early evening of a June day in Baltimore, Maryland, a violent confrontation erupted that would tragically end the life of Kimberly Benjamin, a 46-year-old woman who found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. On June 6, 2023, police officers on patrol witnessed a shooting unfold in the 1300 block of Booth Street. At the intersection of McHenry and South Carey streets, they discovered Kimberly Benjamin with a gunshot wound to her head.
Benjamin was immediately transported
to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries the following day, on June 7, 2023. The initial investigation revealed that she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a shootout. Another individual, a 21-year-old male, was also found at the scene with gunshot wounds to his legs.
The investigation into Benjamin's death led to the identification and arrest of two men, Jason Johnson and Jamal Piles. It was revealed that the tragic incident stemmed from a confrontation between the two men. Jamal Piles was identified as Benjamin's romantic partner. During the altercation, both men allegedly fired weapons, and a stray bullet struck and killed Benjamin.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, both Johnson and Piles faced charges related to the fatal shooting. Jason Johnson, 23, was ultimately found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, firearm use in a felony violent crime, and other related charges. His sentencing was scheduled for November 2024. Jamal Piles was also convicted for his role in the incident, receiving a 20-year sentence for first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, and having a loaded handgun on his person. During his trial, Piles claimed he was acting in self-defense.
