In the late afternoon of July 22, 2023, a dispute at a hotel in Capitol Heights, Maryland, escalated into a fatal encounter for 37-year-old Demetric Martin of Oxon Hill. The male victim was found outside the La Quinta Inn & Suites on Hampton Park Boulevard around 5:30 p.m., suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident was not a random act
of violence but stemmed from an argument between a member of Martin's family and a group of individuals. It was determined that Demetric Martin himself did not know the suspects. The investigation led to the identification of three relatives from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the alleged perpetrators.
Within a day of the shooting, on July 23, authorities arrested 28-year-old Te Shear Baxter and 32-year-old Tequoia Baxter at the hotel. A third suspect, 18-year-old Ade Boggs, was apprehended in Philadelphia with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit. All three individuals were charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. Following their arrests, Te Shear and Tequoia Baxter were held at the Prince George's County Department of Corrections, while Boggs awaited extradition from Philadelphia.
