In the quiet neighborhood of Fort Washington, Maryland, a horrific sequence of events unfolded on the evening of August 31, 2023, shattering the peace of the community on Tall Timber Court. Rori Burch, a 52-year-old female, became the victim of a shocking act of violence. Witnesses reported seeing her running from her husband, Michael Kevin Burch, outside their home. In a harrowing scene, he fired multiple shots at her, causing her to fall to the ground.
He then approached her and fatally shot her in the head.
The tragedy escalated as a concerned neighbor, upon hearing the gunfire, ran to the Burch home to offer assistance. When the neighbor knocked on the front door, he was met with gunfire from Michael Burch and was shot multiple times. Following the shootings, the 62-year-old suspect barricaded himself inside his residence, leading to an hours-long standoff with Prince George's County police who had responded to the scene around 5:45 p.m. Negotiators and the Emergency Services Team attempted to communicate with Burch for several hours without success.
Around 10:45 p.m., officers made the decision to enter the home. They found Michael Burch in an upstairs bedroom near a rifle and a handgun and took him into custody without further incident. A subsequent search of the property revealed a deeper tragedy. Rori Burch was found deceased in the front yard where she had been shot. Inside the home, near the front door, officers discovered the body of their 25-year-old son, Michael Burch Jr., who had also been fatally shot. The injured neighbor was transported to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Michael Kevin Burch was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and other related charges for the killing of his wife and son, and the shooting of his neighbor. While a motive for the devastating rampage was still under investigation, the incident was noted as the 17th domestic-related homicide in Prince George's County that year. The community was left to mourn the loss of Rori Burch and her son, who were remembered by family as kind individuals who brought joy to those around them.
