In the winter of 2023, a shooting in Columbia, Maryland, cut short the life of 18-year-old Jeremiah Isaiah Darden. On the evening of December 17th, at approximately 9:25 p.m., police were called to the 7600 block of Woodpark Lane, where they discovered two individuals had been shot in an open stairwell of an apartment building. Both Darden and another 20-year-old man were quickly transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
While the second victim was treated for his injuries and later released, Darden succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead overnight.
Initial investigations led police to believe the shots were fired from a passing vehicle and that the incident may not have been a random act. The shooting left residents of the normally quiet community on edge. In the weeks and months that followed, detectives worked to piece together the events of that tragic night, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest and offering a reward of up to $5,000.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in April 2025, when Howard County police announced the arrest of a suspect. Kennard White, 19, was identified as the individual allegedly responsible for the shooting. At the time of his arrest for the murder, White was already incarcerated at the Howard County Detention Center since January 2024 on charges related to an unrelated robbery. He has since been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and numerous weapons violations in connection with the death of Jeremiah Darden.
