In the early moments of May 1, 2020, a dispute escalated into deadly violence in Columbia, Maryland. Anthony Tayvon McNeil, a 24-year-old male from Baltimore, was found by Howard County police in a parking lot near the intersection of Governor Warfield Parkway and Twin Rivers Road, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers had been called to the area around 12:15 a.m. for reports of a fight involving several people and the sound of shots fired.
McNeil was rushed to Howard County General Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. They believed it originated from a verbal altercation that had occurred earlier in the evening between acquaintances of McNeil and another man, Jerome Tyrell Thomas. Through their investigation, which included the collection of surveillance footage from the area, detectives identified the then 28-year-old Thomas as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting.
After the incident, Thomas fled the state, attempting to evade capture by going to North Carolina. However, law enforcement tracked him down, and on May 15, 2020, he was taken into custody at a motel in Annapolis. Thomas was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and various firearm offenses.
In June 2023, a Howard County jury found Jerome Tyrell Thomas guilty of the first-degree murder of Anthony McNeil. In September of that year, a judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Thomas received an additional 10 years for firearm-related charges. While incarcerated and awaiting trial for the murder, he also assaulted a correctional officer, which resulted in an additional six-month consecutive sentence.
