In what began as an online sale of a cellphone, 22-year-old Montez Case of Columbia, Maryland, was fatally shot in a tragic turn of events. On June 11, 2021, Case had arranged to meet two individuals near a convenience store on Hickory Ridge Road to complete the transaction. However, the arranged meeting took a violent turn when the two suspects attempted to rob him.
During the attempted robbery, Case was shot.
He was subsequently transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Montez Case succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead two days later, on June 13, 2021.
An investigation by the Howard County Police led to the identification and arrest of two suspects from District Heights on July 14, 2021. The suspects were identified as 20-year-old Quillon Ivan Long Jr. and a 15-year-old male. Both individuals were charged with first- and second-degree murder, armed robbery, assault, and other related charges. The 15-year-old was charged as an adult.
In 2023, Quillon Ivan Long Jr. was found guilty by a Howard County Circuit Court jury of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and handgun possession charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus five years for his role in the death of Montez Case.
