On the late summer evening of August 19, 2025, the tranquility of Columbia, Maryland's Merriweather District was shattered by gunfire. Leon Grant Jr., a 39-year-old Black male from Salisbury who had been staying in Columbia, was fatally shot at approximately 10:35 p.m. in a parking lot situated off Dove Sail Lane and Merriweather Drive. The area, located near the well-known Merriweather Post Pavilion, became the scene of a targeted attack that would leave a community on edge.

to witness accounts provided to law enforcement, the harrowing event unfolded as Grant was entering his vehicle. An unidentified male suspect approached him, fired multiple shots at close range, and then quickly fled the scene. When Howard County police officers arrived, they discovered Grant inside his vehicle, suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators promptly launched a homicide investigation, asserting that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather a deliberate and targeted killing. This belief was echoed in statements to the public, assuring them that there was no ongoing threat to the community. In an effort to generate leads, authorities announced a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest of the individual responsible for Grant's death.
