In the quiet, early morning hours of Saturday, February 17, 2024, the life of 23-year-old Asia Lilly was tragically cut short in Parkville, Maryland. Responding to a call of shots fired around 5:25 a.m. in the 6600 block of Collinsdale Road, police discovered Lilly inside her running vehicle, which had crashed near the apartment she lived in. She was suffering from gunshot wounds to her upper body and, despite the efforts of first responders, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The
investigation into the young mother's death quickly focused on a single suspect: 24-year-old Cameron Murel, the father of Lilly's child. Evidence gathered at the scene and from Lilly's nearby apartment pointed toward Murel. Investigators found several spent 9mm shell casings on the dashboard and driver's side of Lilly's car. An open sliding glass door to her apartment revealed a handgun magazine, gun cleaning brushes, and an unfired cartridge. A bookbag containing Murel's passport also held a partially empty box of 9mm ammunition, the same brand and caliber as the casings found at the crime scene.
Further investigation revealed a history of domestic and child custody disputes between the couple, with a judge having ordered joint legal and shared physical custody of their child just two months prior. Murel, a security guard with a state-registered Glock 9mm, had been absent from work since the shooting, telling his supervisor his child was sick. However, a family member was actually caring for the child. Authorities tracked Murel to his mother's home, where she directed them to a closet where he had placed his weapon. The gun was the same caliber and brand as the ammunition found at the scene of the crime.
Cameron Murel was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in the death of Asia Lilly. He is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young woman described as a caring and supportive person and a doting mother, whose life was taken in an act of violence that will forever impact the daughter she left behind.
