In the waning hours of the afternoon on March 26, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the daily rhythm of the 1800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore. When the echoes faded, 28-year-old Eugene Fitzgerald, a Black / African American male, was left suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics arrived swiftly and transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives
immediately launched an investigation into the brazen daylight shooting. Their efforts led them to identify 34-year-old Tony Dukes as the primary suspect in Fitzgerald's murder. Less than a month later, on the morning of April 15, 2024, members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force located and arrested Dukes in the 4300 block of Liberty Heights Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident and formally charged with first-degree murder and related firearm offenses.
The investigation revealed that the killing was a calculated act. Surveillance footage meticulously tracked Dukes' movements for over two hours as he traveled from Rogers Station to Lexington Market and then to the Upton Station area, effectively stalking his victim. The evidence compiled by prosecutors was overwhelming, leading to a conviction. Tony Dukes was found guilty of first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, and possession of a firearm with a felony conviction. A judge subsequently sentenced him to life in prison plus an additional 35 years for the murder of Eugene Fitzgerald.
