On the first day of the new year in Baltimore, Maryland, the life of Sheamon Pearlie, a 20-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On January 1, 2017, at approximately 3:15 p.m., police officers on patrol in the 1800 block of West Fayette Street were drawn by the sound of gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered Pearlie suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident marked one of the first homicides of the year in a city grappling with persistent violence. The sudden and violent nature of Pearlie’s death sent ripples of grief through his family and community. The pain for the Pearlie family would be compounded just over a year later when Sheamon's younger brother, 18-year-old Damon Jamal Perlie, was also fatally shot in a separate incident, only a few blocks from where his older brother had been killed.
Despite the initial police response and investigation into Sheamon Pearlie’s death, there have been no publicly announced arrests or identification of any suspects in the years that have followed.
