In the early hours of May 23, 2021, the life of 39-year-old Tayvon Kenan was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire that echoed through the Homestead neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Responding to a call for a shooting at approximately 2 a.m., police officers arrived at the 1500 block of Carswell Street to a grim scene. They discovered Kenan unresponsive, alongside a 50-year-old man who had also sustained gunshot wounds.
Both men were rushed to a local hospital for medical attention, but Kenan's injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The surviving victim was treated for his injuries.
The investigation into the double shooting led Baltimore police to identify a suspect in the weeks that followed. On June 8, 2021, authorities arrested 19-year-old D'Angelo Woodrum in connection with the incident. Police reports suggest that the shooting stemmed from a dispute that escalated into deadly violence. Woodrum was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first-degree murder for the death of Tayvon Kenan and additional charges related to the shooting of the second man.
D'Angelo Woodrum's case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a trial in Baltimore City Circuit Court. During the trial, which took place in October 2022, jurors were shown police body camera footage from the night of the shooting, offering a stark glimpse into the immediate aftermath of the violence. The footage depicted the scene as first responders arrived, with one of the victims directing an officer to the porch where Kenan lay mortally wounded. The prosecution presented its case, and Woodrum, who was 21 by the time of the trial, faced the possibility of a life sentence for the charges brought against him.
