Tequia Monea “KeKe” Nails, a 32-year-old woman, was tragically shot and killed in her Capitol Heights, Maryland, apartment on September 24, 2024. At the time of her death, she was holding her two-month-old infant son. Her other three children were also in the home when the fatal shooting occurred. The incident has been described by authorities as a domestic-related homicide.
The suspect in her death was identified as her 26-year-old ex-boyfriend and the father of her youngest
children, Quindell Mercer. According to family members, Mercer had come to the apartment and, after being repeatedly asked to leave, he opened fire on Nails. A niece who witnessed the event stated that Mercer shot Nails three times. He then reportedly attempted to shoot the niece, but the gun jammed, allowing her to escape with one of the children.
Following the shooting, a search was initiated for Mercer. The morning after the attack, he was found by a police task force in a Washington, D.C. apartment with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities believe he shot Nails before fleeing the scene and then taking his own life. The case was therefore concluded as a murder-suicide, and no arrests were made.
