In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a 10-year-old Black/African American girl named Trinity Johnson had her life tragically cut short in December 2023. A bright and lively child who had just celebrated her birthday, Trinity was known for her love of dancing, her smile, and for being a good student. Her promising future ended inside her own home near 39th and Hampton, when she sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound in the early morning hours of December 13, 2023.
After fighting for her life for several days, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away.
The immediate investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department led to the arrest of a suspect: Trinity's own 13-year-old brother. He was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Court documents later revealed conflicting accounts of the tragic event. The brother initially told investigators that he had found a revolver in a planter box outside a high school the day before and had hidden it in the family's couch. He claimed that while play-fighting with his siblings, he fell onto the couch, and the gun accidentally discharged. However, another sibling present during the incident told investigators that the brother had the gun in his hand and jokingly pointed it at them, firing in their direction under the belief that the weapon was empty. After the shot was fired, the boy reportedly panicked and ran to wake his mother, pleading for help for his sister as paramedics and police arrived.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the 13-year-old was charged with second-degree reckless homicide and possession of a firearm by a person under 18. Due to his age, the court ordered that he would not be charged as an adult. A judge found probable cause for the reckless homicide charge and ordered the teen to undergo a medical evaluation while remaining in secure detention. His defense attorney noted that upon the arrival of first responders, the boy was found hovering over his sister, begging them to help her. The family has referred to the shooting as a tragic accident, emphasizing that the teen loved his siblings dearly. The district attorney's office indicated that based on the teenager's statements, no one else was expected to be charged in connection with the fatal incident.
