On the cold night of January 28, 2024, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a life was tragically cut short. Andre Gregory, a 26-year-old Black male, was working as a security guard at Eve Lounge on West Fond du Lac Avenue. Remembered by his family as a loving, caring, and protective individual, Gregory was simply doing his job when violence erupted. An argument that began inside the bar between two groups of men spilled out onto the sidewalk.
Gregory and the bar's owner followed the men outside to de-escalate the situation.
As the argument escalated into a physical fight, multiple gunshots rang out. When police arrived, they found Andre Gregory on the sidewalk with fatal gunshot wounds; eleven spent casings were discovered nearby. Two other individuals, both 34 years old, also sustained gunshot wounds in the incident but were expected to survive. Gregory was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his family, including his mother and sister, devastated and searching for answers. His sister described him as their "everything," a best friend to whom she looked up. In the days following his death, loved ones gathered for a somber vigil outside Eve Lounge to honor his memory.
The investigation into the shooting led Milwaukee police to identify a suspect. Trevante Young, a 28-year-old Milwaukee man, was identified through witness statements and surveillance video from nearby businesses. The footage reportedly showed Young entering the lounge shortly before the altercation. He was subsequently charged with first-degree reckless homicide, two counts of first-degree reckless injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Despite the charges, a warrant had to be issued for his arrest as he was not in police custody.
