In the early morning hours of November 15, 2024, the stillness of Carver Park in Milwaukee was shattered by violence. On the basketball court, a place typically filled with the sounds of friendly competition, 18-year-old Jaylan Powell was found deceased, having been shot four times. The discovery, made around 1:45 a.m., launched a homicide investigation by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.
Powell was a student at North Division High School.
The investigation into the death of the young man, described by his family as a loving and protective individual with a bright smile, moved swiftly. Within days, detectives from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office made arrests, taking three teenagers into custody on November 19th. The suspects were identified as a 17-year-old boy and two 15-year-old boys. Due to their ages, their identities were not publicly released at the time of their arrest.
Further details emerged as the legal process began. It was revealed that the tragic incident stemmed from a prearranged meeting to trade firearms at the park. According to the criminal complaint, one of the 15-year-olds, accompanied by two friends, met with Powell to conduct the trade. Investigators stated that all individuals involved were armed. The situation escalated when Powell reportedly set his firearm down, at which point the 15-year-old allegedly pointed his pistol at Powell and fired. The suspect is then said to have fled the scene with all three firearms. Subsequently, a 15-year-old was charged in connection with the homicide of Jaylan Powell.
