In the winter of 2017, the life of 19-year-old Croshian Xaviere-Romaine Edwards Jr., a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in what should have been the safety of his West Allis, Wisconsin home. On the evening of February 12th, what began as an attempted robbery escalated into a devastating act of violence that would not only claim his life but also that of his younger brother.
The incident unfolded when two teenagers, aged 14 and 13, entered the Edwards' residence
with the intent to rob the brothers of marijuana, money, and video games. During the commission of this crime, the 14-year-old, identified as Spencer Lewis, opened fire. Croshian, known affectionately as "CJ," was shot multiple times. His 17-year-old brother, Trajan Edwards, was also critically wounded in the attack. While first responders worked to save them, CJ was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother, Trajan, fought for his life but succumbed to his injuries two days later, deepening the immense tragedy for the family.
The West Allis Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the double homicide. Their efforts led them to the two young suspects. The alleged shooter, Spencer Lewis, was taken into custody on the same day as the shooting. His 13-year-old accomplice was also arrested for his involvement in the attempted robbery. Investigators recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the murders, which Lewis had reportedly stolen from his father.
During interviews with detectives, Lewis confessed to the shootings, stating that he "got scared" during the robbery attempt. He admitted to shooting Trajan first and then encountering CJ as he tried to flee the house, shooting him as well. The motive for the robbery was reportedly to get money for expensive clothing. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's office charged Spencer Lewis as an adult with two counts of first-degree reckless homicide and one count of attempted armed robbery. The 13-year-old was expected to face charges in juvenile court for his role in the tragic events that led to the deaths of Croshian and Trajan Edwards.
