On May 18, 2023, Maurice Bates, a 44-year-old man originally from Milwaukee but living in Georgia, was shot and killed while driving near the intersection of Teutonia Avenue and Atkinson Street. Witnesses reported that Bates was shot while in his car, which then accelerated erratically, hitting poles and curbs before ultimately crashing.
