In the late afternoon of June 15, 2024, a shooting at Sherman Park in Milwaukee claimed the life of 65-year-old Gary Grose. The incident, which occurred around 5:41 p.m. near the park's playground, also resulted in a second individual sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. First responders found Grose with gunshot wounds at the scene, and he was pronounced dead.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the double shooting.
Authorities have suggested that the motive may have been retaliatory, possibly connected to a fight that had taken place several minutes before the shooting. According to his obituary, Gary Grose died while "protecting others from harm."
As the investigation continues, authorities are still searching for unknown suspects. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The community has been left to mourn the loss of a man remembered as a "gentle giant" and a "basketball legend in Miltown."
