On a spring afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of 26-year-old Charles Jerome Burges-Cleveland, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On May 3, 2022, gunshots shattered the peace in the neighborhood near 44th Street and Auer Avenue, leaving Burges-Cleveland with fatal injuries. First responders arrived at the scene to find him unresponsive, and despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The shocking event also left another person, a 54-year-old, wounded but alive.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a suspect who was known to the victim. Witnesses recounted a heated argument between Burges-Cleveland and another man just before the shooting erupted. According to one account, the assailant pulled out a gun and fired several shots. Even after Burges-Cleveland fell to the ground, the attacker stood over him and continued to fire. An autopsy would later reveal that he had sustained fifteen gunshot wounds. The surviving victim also identified the same individual as the person responsible for the violent outburst.
Based on witness testimony and police investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on May 11, 2022, for 19-year-old Shokee Cleveland. He was formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. For months, Cleveland remained at large. However, in November of the same year, he was taken into custody by the Milwaukee police. Following his arrest, he was scheduled for his initial court appearance to face the charges related to the death of Charles Jerome Burges-Cleveland.
