On New Year's Day of 2023, a promising life was cut short in Oklahoma City. Daniel Howard, a 22-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in the early morning hours outside the Sunset Patio Lounge. A talented football player, Howard was a graduate of Millwood High School, where he had been a standout running back on two state championship teams. He was continuing his athletic and academic career at Fort Hays State University, playing as a defensive back and majoring in Sociology. He was back in his hometown for the holidays when the tragic events unfolded.
The night began with New Year's Eve celebrations at the crowded lounge. According to witnesses and police reports, a dispute that may have started over a spilled drink escalated inside the establishment. The conflict moved to the parking lot just after midnight, where gunfire erupted. In the chaos, five people were struck by bullets. While four others sustained injuries, Daniel Howard was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a son, a father, and a teammate with dreams of a professional football career, a future that was violently extinguished before the first day of the new year had properly begun.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification and arrest of three suspects. Khalil Warren was arrested two months after the incident in Pennsylvania and extradited back to Oklahoma. He was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for Howard's murder. Two other individuals, J'Coal Glover and Destiny Adams, were also implicated. The accessory to murder charge against Glover was eventually dismissed. Adams, however, was convicted of being an accessory to murder. The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Howard's family, though the sentencing hearings were fraught with emotion and even led to altercations in the courtroom, reflecting the profound loss and enduring pain caused by Daniel Howard's untimely death.
