In the late hours of May 5, 2023, tragedy befell 26-year-old Johntavius Crawford in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Responding to a shooting call at an apartment complex near 41st and Garnett around 11:45 p.m., police officers discovered Crawford suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head. He was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Johntavius Crawford's injuries were too severe.
He was pronounced brain dead the following day, on May 6, 2023. Born on July 7, 1996, his life was cut short at the age of 26.
In the wake of the fatal shooting, the Tulsa Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification of two suspects. On May 10, just days after the incident, police located and arrested 42-year-old DeAnthony Smith. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction. Another man, 36-year-old Nathan Luckey, was also taken into custody and charged as an accessory to the murder. The diligent work of the detectives brought a swift, if somber, development to a case that had ended a young man's life.
