Kalvin Dale Hulvey was a 46-year-old White man from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born in McAllister, he was a married father of two young sons. Those who knew him described him as a generously kind person, making his sudden and violent death a shock to his community.
On the evening of August 27, 2023, Hulvey was walking with a female companion in a north Tulsa neighborhood near Pine and Lewis. At around 8 p.m., a man on a miniature motorcycle approached them.
The rider, described as being dressed in all black with a face mask, called out Hulvey’s name and then opened fire. Hulvey was struck by multiple gunshots. He stumbled from the sidewalk and collapsed in the street as the shooter fled the scene. Emergency responders arrived and transported Hulvey to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Tulsa Police Department detectives began investigating the homicide, questioning witnesses and reviewing available evidence. Through their investigation, they identified 32-year-old Justin Trammel as the primary suspect in the shooting. On the morning of September 1, 2023, just five days after the murder, the Tulsa Police Department’s Special Operations Team executed a warrant at a home near the 900 block of North Birmingham Avenue. Trammel was taken into custody at the residence without incident.
Following his arrest, Trammel was booked into the Tulsa County Jail and charged with First-Degree Murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. The case progressed through the legal system for over a year. In October 2024, Justin Trammel pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and the weapon charge in connection with Kalvin Hulvey’s death. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 30 years in prison for the murder and an additional 10 years for the firearms offense. As of that month, he is incarcerated in a state correctional center in Oklahoma.
