In the summer of 2021, the life of 24-year-old Donavan Wimberly, a Black male, was cut short in an act of violence in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On June 11, Wimberly was shot near the intersection of Apache and Harvard. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a local hospital. The incident was not considered a random act by law enforcement, who believed it to be a targeted attack, although a specific motive was not immediately clear.
The investigation into Wimberly's death
continued for a month without an arrest. A break in the case came on July 12, when a 17-year-old named Donquanyay Lucas was injured in a separate shootout. While investigating this second incident, Tulsa police identified Lucas as the primary suspect in Wimberly's murder. At the time of the second shooting, there was already an active arrest warrant for Lucas in connection with Wimberly's death.
Following his treatment at a hospital for a gunshot wound, authorities planned to book Lucas into jail. He faced serious charges, including first-degree murder and possession of a firearm after juvenile adjudication. The death of Donavan Wimberly left a significant impact on his community, with friends and family gathering for his funeral services at the 36th Street North Event Center in Tulsa to mourn the loss of a young life.
