In the Rainier Beach neighborhood of South Seattle, a dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion on the morning of November 11, 2023. Jason F. Tuttle, a 53-year-old Caucasian male, was shot and critically injured around 10 a.m. near the 9800 block of Martin Luther King Junior Way South. First responders found Tuttle with a gunshot wound and transported him to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The King County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Tuttle died from a gunshot wound to the head and officially ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led Seattle police to a suspect. A 33-year-old man named Ryan Smith was identified and located at a nearby house. Patrol and SWAT officers took Smith into custody. According to charging documents, the tragic incident stemmed from what was described as a "mild disagreement" between the two men at a job site. Prosecutors allege that surveillance footage captured the moment Smith shot Tuttle at point-blank range.
In the wake of the incident, Ryan Smith was charged with first-degree murder. During his initial court appearance, he entered a plea of not guilty. A judge set his bail at $3 million, reflecting the serious nature of the charge. The death of Jason Tuttle marked the 68th homicide in Seattle for the year 2023, contributing to ongoing community concerns about gun violence.
