In the early morning hours of November 17, 2023, a tragic series of events unfolded in a quiet residential neighborhood in Bremerton, Washington, culminating in the death of 47-year-old Denise Sonya P Pangelinan, a White/Caucasian female. The day began with a heavy police presence as law enforcement, including SWAT teams from multiple agencies and FBI agents, descended upon her home on Forest Drive.
They were there to serve an arrest warrant for her 49-year-old ex-boyfriend, Shaun Luzama, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Pierce County.
What followed was a prolonged and tense standoff that lasted for approximately ten hours. Luzama barricaded himself inside Pangelinan's residence and, beginning around 3:40 a.m., began firing shots at the officers. Throughout the morning, negotiation attempts proved unsuccessful as Luzama continued to intermittently fire a rifle and a pistol at law enforcement. The situation escalated shortly after 10 a.m. when SWAT teams engaged with Luzama.
In the exchange of gunfire that followed, both Shaun Luzama and Denise Pangelinan were struck. Luzama died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Pangelinan, a mother of four, sustained a single, fatal gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy later ruled her death a homicide.
In the aftermath, questions linger about the precise circumstances of her death. It remains unclear whether the fatal shot was fired by Luzama or by law enforcement officers returning fire. Pangelinan's son stated that his mother was unarmed and expressed his suspicion that she may have been killed by law enforcement. The Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team, in conjunction with the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, is conducting an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and the origin of the gunshot that killed Denise Pangelinan. Her family and community mourn the loss of a woman described as a loving and caring individual who was a mother figure to many.
