In the spring of 2011, a promising young Caucasian woman's life was tragically cut short, leaving a community in fear and a family grasping for answers that remain elusive to this day. Sara Lynea Burke, a 19-year-old female, was fatally attacked on the evening of May 3, 2011, in Bremerton, Washington. An honor roll student at Renaissance High School, Sara had her sights set on a future helping young children, with plans to enroll at Olympic College to study Early Childhood Education. She was known for her social and loving nature, often spending her free time with a wide circle of friends.
On that fateful Tuesday night, Sara was walking to her boyfriend's house, a routine journey that took a horrifying turn. At approximately 9:30 p.m., near the intersection of Warren Avenue and Eighth Street, she was stabbed in the neck. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing an argument and screams before Sara's body was discovered on the sidewalk. Despite the swift arrival of emergency services, her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The attack was sudden and brutal, with no apparent motive; robbery and sexual assault were quickly ruled out by investigators, deepening the mystery of why Sara was targeted.
The investigation into Sara's murder has been a long and frustrating one for both her family and law enforcement. In the years following her death, the Bremerton Police Department, with assistance from the FBI, has pursued numerous leads. The case was potentially linked to two other stabbings in the area, fueling fears of a serial killer. In June 2011, a man survived a similar stabbing, and in February 2012, another woman, Melody Brannon, was killed. This series of violent acts prompted police to release a composite sketch of a person of interest described as a light-skinned Black male.
In early 2014, detectives announced they had identified a new "person of interest" specifically in Sara's case, distinct from the individual sought in connection with Brannon's murder. This development cast some doubt on the serial killer theory, or at least suggested the possibility of separate perpetrators. Despite this promising lead and an intensive investigative "surge," authorities conceded they lacked sufficient evidence to make an arrest. The person of interest was never publicly named.
To this day, Sara Burke's murder remains unsolved, a cold case that continues to haunt the Bremerton community. Her family has consistently pleaded with the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough. No arrests have ever been made, and no suspect has been officially named, leaving the question of who was responsible for the senseless death of a vibrant young woman unanswered. Her loved ones are left to remember the bright and caring person she was, while hoping that justice will one day be served.
