In the Central District of Seattle, on the evening of March 13, 2024, the life of 41-year-old Eboni Walker, a Black woman known for her dedication to her family and community, was tragically cut short by gun violence. A devoted single mother of four sons, she was taking a break from a double shift at her job with a homeless outreach agency when she was fatally shot near the intersection of 24th Avenue South and South Jackson Street.
The King County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Walker died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Family members describe Walker as a hardworking woman whose life centered around her children, aged between 11 and 23. She was committed to providing for them and instilled in them the values of a strong work ethic. Her dedication extended beyond her own family, as she was passionate about helping the disenfranchised and marginalized in her community through her work, providing essentials like food, clothing, and shelter. Her aunt, Shirley Wroten, remembered her as a "giver" who wanted to provide not just for her family but for the community as well.
At the time of her death, Seattle police had just been in the vicinity due to another shooting that had occurred hours earlier near Garfield High School, though they do not believe the two incidents were related. First responders attempted to save Walker, but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her family firmly believes she was not the intended target of the shooting, but rather an innocent bystander caught in a senseless act of violence. They recall her as the "life of the party," someone who loved to laugh and joke, and whose absence has left a profound void in their lives.
As of late March 2024, the Seattle Police Department had not identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the shooting. Authorities have stated that they have limited evidence in the case and have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. The investigation into the death of Eboni Walker remains ongoing as her family continues to seek answers and justice.
