Javon Tucker was a 28-year-old construction worker and a father of two from Columbus, Ohio. Known to friends as "VonVon," he was remembered as a caring and encouraging person who had attended Linden-McKindely High School. He was a solid friend who loved his daughter and had his life cut short by violence.
On the afternoon of May 12, 2023, Tucker and another man were in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood.
After they exited a Dollar Plus store on Mount Vernon Avenue, they were ambushed by gunfire in a nearby parking lot on Atcheson Street. Columbus police officers responded to reports of the shooting and found Tucker unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m. The second victim, a 31-year-old man, was grazed by a bullet and survived his minor injuries.
Investigators recovered shell casings from the parking lot and reviewed security camera footage that proved critical to the case. The video showed suspects retrieving guns from a vehicle before driving to the rear of the store, where they waited for the two men to emerge. The footage allegedly captured one of the assailants, Davon Robinson, firing a handgun with each hand. When detectives interviewed Robinson five days later, he reportedly admitted to firing multiple shots from both weapons at the victims.
Police arrested Davon Robinson shortly after the shooting. A second suspect, Charles Calaway, was apprehended in Norton, Virginia, in June 2023. Both men were charged in connection with Javon Tucker’s death.
The case concluded with guilty pleas from both men. In January 2025, Charles Calaway pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and discharging a firearm at a prohibited premises. He received a prison sentence of 25 to 30.5 years. The following year, Davon Robinson pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault in April 2026. In May 2026, a judge sentenced him to a prison term of 18 to 23.5 years, closing the final chapter in the case.
