On November 16, 2023, 63-year-old Terrance "Terry" Mathis Sr. was fatally shot at the Mentor Green Mobile Estates in Mentor, Ohio. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when Jason Norris, a 47-year-old resident facing eviction, opened fire within the mobile home park. Norris first shot property manager Laura Colon, 62, who was found deceased on a roadway. Terrance Mathis Sr.
was discovered nearby with a stomach wound; officers carried him to safety, but he was pronounced dead shortly after at a hospital. Another resident, 81-year-old Thomas Galizia, was also found dead at the scene. A fourth victim, 63-year-old Charles Skala, sustained gunshot wounds to the shoulder and thigh and was hospitalized in stable condition. After the shootings, Norris retreated to his home, fired at responding officers without injuring them, and ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Born on February 11, 1960, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Truman and Geraldine (née O'Deens) Mathis, Terry grew up in North Willoughby and attended Willoughby South High School. He enlisted in the Army but was honorably discharged due to medical issues. Terry worked as a CNC machinist and enjoyed playing pool and fishing. He is survived by his son, Terrence P. Mathis Jr.; his companion of 15 years, Kathryn Rogers; sister, Sharon Mathis; niece, Kristin (Shane) Rosenberry; three great-nieces; two great-nephews; and stepsons, Patrick and David Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Daniel Mathis.
