Dennis Le Roy Avery, a 49-year-old man from Willoughby, Ohio, tragically lost his life on April 17, 1989. His death was part of a horrifying incident involving the murder of his entire family by a religious cult led by Jeffrey Lundgren. Avery, his wife Cheryl, and their three daughters—15-year-old Trina, 13-year-old Rebecca, and 7-year-old Karen—were all killed in a barn on their farm in Kirtland, Ohio.
The investigation into the murders revealed that Jeffrey Lundgren, a
self-proclaimed religious teacher, orchestrated the killings. Lundgren convinced his followers that they needed to retreat into the wilderness to reach Zion and for Jesus Christ to return. The group took paramilitary training and collected weapons and ammunition in preparation for their plan. Lundgren assigned Ronald Luff, a cult member, to bring the Avery family members into the barn one at a time and then bury their bodies after killing them.
The authorities were tipped off about the murders in January 1990, leading to the discovery of the bodies buried in the barn. Lundgren was convicted of the murders and sentenced to death, while Luff received five life sentences without the possibility of parole for his role in the killings.
