On November 16, 2023, Thomas Galizia, an 81-year-old resident of Mentor, Ohio, was tragically killed during a shooting incident at the Mentor Greens Mobile Estates. The shooting unfolded around 4:30 PM when Jason Norris, a 47-year-old man facing eviction from the mobile home park, opened fire. Norris had been involved in a prior altercation with Laura Colon, the property manager, who was also shot and killed during the incident.
Galizia was found dead in his home, having been shot by Norris as he attempted to assist Colon and other victims.
The sequence of events began when police responded to reports of gunfire at the mobile home park. Upon arrival, officers discovered Colon deceased in the roadway. Another victim, Terrance Mathis Sr., aged 63, was found nearby with severe injuries and later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. Galizia was later identified as a third victim who had died from gunfire. A fourth individual, Charles Skala, also 63 years old, sustained injuries but survived the attack and remained hospitalized in stable condition.
After shooting the victims, Norris retreated into his home and began firing at responding officers. The police established a perimeter around the area and attempted to negotiate with Norris throughout the evening. However, their efforts were unsuccessful. By approximately 8:15 PM, a tactical drone was deployed into Norris's unit, revealing that he had inflicted a fatal gunshot wound on himself. Inside his residence, authorities found multiple firearms and ammunition.
Following this tragic event, residents of the mobile home park were evacuated for their safety and provided shelter at the Mentor Senior Center. The incident has left the community in shock as investigations continue into the motives behind Norris's actions and any potential warning signs leading up to this violent outburst.
