Jacob Adam Barrett was a 16-year-old sophomore at Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio, remembered for his optimism, humor, and energy. A White male, Jacob was known for being happy, loyal, and humble, and he enjoyed diving into conversations about his theories on life. He was a loving and protective brother to his siblings and his father’s best friend. Jacob loved sports, especially football, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan who dreamed of one day playing in college.
His family and friends deeply miss his goofy laugh and a smile that could brighten any room.
In the early morning of February 11, 2024, at approximately 1:37 a.m., Toledo police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Langdon Street after reports of a person shot. When they arrived, they found Jacob suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The coroner’s office subsequently determined that Jacob died from a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled his death a homicide.
An investigation into the shooting led police to identify a suspect, 29-year-old Dominic Garcia. He was arrested the following day, on February 12, and charged with having weapons under disability. Garcia remained in custody, and on March 6, a Lucas County grand jury indicted him on a charge of murder in connection with Jacob's death. He entered a plea of not guilty on March 13.
On November 13, 2024, Dominic Garcia appeared in court, where he withdrew his not guilty plea and pleaded no contest to reckless homicide, a third-degree felony. He was convicted based on his plea. As of November 2024, Garcia was awaiting sentencing, which was scheduled for November 25.
