On October 9, 2024, at approximately 2:02 PM, Columbus Police officers were dispatched to the 6200 block of Quarter Horse Drive in north Columbus, Ohio, responding to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered 27-year-old Jshawn Simmons suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of Columbus Fire EMS personnel, Simmons was pronounced deceased at 2:11 PM.
The shooting took place outside a hotel located just north of East Dublin Granville Road.
Initially, the circumstances leading up to the shooting were unknown, and no information about a suspect was immediately available. However, detectives quickly identified a potential suspect after witnesses reported seeing a vehicle leaving the area shortly after the incident.
Following an investigation, police charged 53-year-old Kevin Hurt with murder in connection to Simmons' death. Witnesses told police that Hurt had admitted to killing Simmons. The day after the shooting, on October 10, 2024, Hurt turned himself in to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office. Upon surrendering, Hurt reportedly admitted to "killing someone in Columbus, Ohio".
Authorities located and impounded Hurt's vehicle in Cleveland, further connecting him to the crime. The Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit continued to investigate the case, urging anyone with additional information to come forward. As of the latest reports, Kevin Hurt remains in custody, facing murder charges for the fatal shooting of Jshawn Simmons.
