Rashad Ewing, a 46-year-old Black man, was an electrician known for helping people in his Toledo, Ohio, community. His father, Troy Jackson, remembered him as a good young man whom he loved to death. "We laughed. We talked about going fishing together," Jackson said. "I can’t really believe that this is going on."
On the afternoon of October 11, 2024, that life came to a violent end.
Around 3:30 p.m., Ewing drove to a home on Twining Street where a mechanic, 44-year-old Fabian Dorrough, was helping a friend with a vehicle in the driveway. Ewing was upset, believing Dorrough had not correctly repaired his car. According to court documents, the two men exchanged words before Dorrough pulled out a gun and fired twice, striking Ewing at least once in the head and killing him.
Shortly after the shooting, Dorrough turned himself in to Toledo police and was charged with murder. The families of both men packed the courtroom for Dorrough's initial appearances. A Lucas County grand jury later indicted him on two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault. Dorrough pleaded not guilty, and his bond was set at $1 million. As the case proceeded, Ewing's father hoped for a just outcome. "It’s really sad that the young men couldn’t just talk it out," Jackson said. "Work it out without using a gun to settle whatever dispute they had."
The case concluded in May 2025. On May 19, Fabian Dorrough withdrew his not guilty plea and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence, and having weapons while under disability. Eight days later, on May 27, a judge sentenced Dorrough to serve 19 to 24 years in prison, with credit for 229 days already served.
