On the evening of November 7, 2024, Jamar E. Franklin, a 29-year-old Black man from Akron, Ohio, was fatally shot. According to Akron police, Mr. Franklin was sitting in his car in the parking lot of Tasty Carry Out on West Long Street when he was shot following a dispute.
Though wounded, Mr. Franklin managed to drive a short distance before crashing his vehicle near the intersection of South Main Street and West Miller Avenue. Police officers responded to the crash just before 8 p.m.
and found him with an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency responders transported him to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he died from his injuries.
In the days following the shooting, investigators identified three suspects and issued warrants for their arrest. Akron police, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, arrested Khairi Moorer, Derek Edwards, and Robert Davis in connection with Mr. Franklin's death. All three were charged with murder.
In May 2026, the case against the three men went to trial in Summit County Common Pleas Court. At the time of the trial, Moorer was 24, Edwards was 20, and Davis was 21. The trial began on May 11, and after the prosecution presented its case, the jury began deliberations. On May 22, 2026, the jury returned its verdict, finding all three defendants not guilty on all charges. Jurors determined the evidence was insufficient to sustain the murder charge against any of the men.
Following the acquittals, the criminal proceedings against Moorer, Edwards, and Davis were concluded. As of May 2026, the murder of Jamar Franklin remains unsolved.
