In the early hours of an autumn morning in Albuquerque, a life was tragically cut short in what authorities have described as a fatal confrontation fueled by jealousy. On October 16, 2024, Lisvany Penaranda, a Hispanic male, was found lying in the roadway near the Volcanis Commons Apartments at 6901 Glenrio Rd NW. A passerby discovered him with a gunshot wound to the chest, an injury from which he would not recover.
First responders were dispatched to the scene, but Penaranda succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly centered on a suspect connected to his personal life. Albuquerque police arrested 41-year-old Johanni Pacheco Hernandez in connection with the shooting. The narrative that unfolded was one of a soured past relationship leading to a deadly outcome. Pacheco Hernandez is the ex-husband of the woman Penaranda was dating at the time of his death.
According to detectives, the events leading up to the fatal shooting began with a tense interaction. Pacheco Hernandez had allegedly expressed his strong disapproval of his ex-wife's relationship with Penaranda, reportedly telling her that she could have been with any other man. In the moments before the incident, Penaranda's girlfriend saw Pacheco Hernandez's vehicle parked near her apartment. She reportedly tried to warn Penaranda to avoid a conflict, but tragically, she was unable to reach him in time. The homicide unit took over the investigation, and with an arrest made, the case is now considered closed by the City of Albuquerque.
